What will your concept be?
Researching THE topic that will interest your audience is not complicated. However, before launching your podcast, it's important to define a precise theme and stick to it! Your first subscribers will follow you because they're interested in that topic.
Above all, you need to ensure that your concept meets 3 essential criteria :
- The concept you're creating doesn't exist, or at least you're choosing a new angle of attack. That way, you won't be accused of plagiarism.
- There's a community of people (large and small) interested in this subject. So you won't be starting from scratch. Do a little market research to analyze your audience. This will tell you whether your target audience will be receptive to a podcast. For example, if you're targeting the elderly, a podcast may not be the right communication channel.
- The subject matter should allow you to produce several episodes without repeating yourself. In fact, it can be useful and interesting to list a good number of episode topics, so that you can see the breadth of your theme.
But there's more to the concept than the topics you cover. You also need to ask yourself the right questions. Here's a non-exhaustive list of things to keep in mind:
- What name should you choose? Think of a name that's broad enough to leave room for the future of your podcast, and allow it to evolve.
- How many people will be involved? It's possible to imagine several speakers and hosts, but also other people who will help you edit the audio or broadcast the podcast.
- What format do you prefer? (Choose according to the theme you're going to cover): Here, the choice is vast. You can choose to interview your guests, or stick to a slightly different format, such as fiction.
- How long will your episodes be? Once again, the answer to this question depends on the theme you've chosen. Some subjects will require more precision and time than others.
- You'll also need to decide how often your podcasts will appear: how often will they be broadcast?
Work on your cover design
Having a well thought-out podcast is all well and good. But have you thought about your brand image? As you now know, visuals are crucial to attracting and captivating attention. So don't forget your podcast cover. You can even create an intro music track, which will instantly let listeners know they're on your channel.
Of course, this step depends on the previous one. The cover must be in keeping with the concept you've chosen. Your listeners need to be able to understand what you're going to talk about in your episodes, or at least have an overview.
What about the material?
Basically, you need a microphone to record your podcast. Here, the choice is yours. It all depends on the importance you attach to your podcast, and the quality you want to give it.
You can invest in professional equipment. In this case, you can choose a fixed microphone, nomadic equipment, or even a lapel microphone. It all depends on the format you've chosen beforehand. If your podcast is going to be around for a long time, it might be worth investing in quality equipment. It all depends on your budget and your ambitions.
But you can also give priority to the content of your podcast, and concentrate on the content. In that case, you can simply use your phone's microphone, which is more than sufficient. You can also take a headset with a built-in microphone and link it to either your computer or your smartphone. All you need is some audio recording software.
The main thing is torecord in a suitable environment. Ideally, you should have access to a recording studio. Ici, vous n’aurez pas à vous souciez de certaiHere, you won't have to worry about things like soundproofing. If you don't want to invest, or if you don't have the budget, you can also opt for a soundproofed, furnished room. But why? Without furniture, there's a risk that the sound will bounce off the wall, creating echoes you don't want.
A podcast without a script?
Recording your podcast straight away, without having thought about what you're going to say, isn't necessarily the best idea.
Ideally, you should have a guideline, a structured plan with the main ideas you want to cover. Think carefully about the introduction, introduce yourself and, of course, conclude by summarizing what you've said during your episode.
Time for action!
To record your episode, you'll need software. Here again, you can choose from among the many that already exist: Audacity, Garage Band, or software already pre-installed on your device.
It's important to understand how the software works, so you don't get lost while recording.
And don't forget to make a final check on microphone operation, to ensure that the recording goes smoothly.
The editing stage
The time you spend on this step is important. If your podcast has no professional stakes, you can simply keep your recording as it is. You can also add an introduction, a conclusion and, why not, credits (which you'll add at the start of each podcast).
But you can also keep the passages most relevant to the subject you're tackling, and work on your editing with sound effects and background music. However, make sure you don't play the music too loudly, so that your listeners can hear you clearly.
There's also a very important step not to be overlooked: mixing. It will make your recording more pleasant to listen to.
Where to post your podcast?
Hosting is a compulsory, and above all essential, step if you want your podcast to be properly distributed on platforms. It's a rather technical part, but not that complicated.
You'll need to upload your file to the host of your choice. This will then generate an RSS feed, which will be communicated to platforms such as Spotify, Google Podcasts or Deezer, for example.
This RSS feed is your podcast's passport. It contains all the information linked to it, known as metadata (name, episode titles, images, etc.).
Broadcasting
Distributing your podcast is the culmination of all your hours of work. It's the complementary stage to hosting.
Remember: the hosting provider you choose will not only store your podcast, but also distribute it.
Depending on the host you choose, the platforms on which your podcast will be broadcast will not be the same. So be sure to check that the platforms on which you want to broadcast your recording are compatible with your host.
One important thing you need to know is that the host will take care of distributing your podcast directly. You won't have to do anything except check that the job is done.
Communication!
Of course, you can't publish your podcast without communicating about the episodes you release.
Communication is divided into three stages:
- Knowing your listeners : Knowing your target audience is essential when you want to communicate about a product. It's the same for your podcast. You need to define what interests them, what motivates them and what inhibits them from listening to your episodes, and also their typical day. This will enable you to communicate at the right moment.
- Defining your brand image : To define your brand image, you need to know your target audience (previous step), as well as your vision, i.e. the main idea of your podcast. Not forgetting the concept and values you wish to convey through your recordings.
- Communication itself : there's no secret here. You need to use what you determined in the previous steps to communicate effectively. As far as platforms are concerned, social networks are a reliable source and an indispensable platform for communicating what you want.
And don't forget that regularity is the golden rule of podcasting.
